That context is more useful than a promise of energy in general. A repeated sprint session, a series of demanding lifting sets and an easy walk involve different demands. Before evaluating a supplement, describe your activity and the outcome you care about. More repetitions at a given load, a faster sprint and a different number on a scale are separate questions.
What happened when researchers added resistance training
In a 12-week study, 19 resistance-trained men followed a structured programme while receiving creatine or placebo. The creatine group achieved greater gains in several strength, fat-free-mass and muscle-fibre measurements. Because both groups trained, the experiment investigated what supplementation added to training, rather than what a powder could achieve on its own. [2]
The study is small and its participants were trained men, so it cannot predict an exact percentage improvement for a new lifter, a woman or an older adult. Its practical contribution is the comparison: an ingredient was tested alongside the behaviour relevant to the goal. A credible claim should retain that relationship instead of removing the training programme from the story.
The benefit can depend on what is measured
Another placebo-controlled experiment tested repeated sets of bench press and jump squats after a short creatine supplementation period. The study reported improved muscular performance in those repeated efforts. It supports a specific exercise context, not a claim that every athletic quality improves at once. [3]
The Australian Institute of Sport places creatine among supplements with strong evidence for use in specific sporting situations and protocols. That wording includes an important condition: specific situations. A substantial evidence base still leaves room for deciding that a supplement is irrelevant to someone's present activity, preferences or budget. [4]
Keep progress measures honest
A useful training record is more informative than a single enthusiastic session. Note the exercise, load, repetitions and rest intervals so that comparisons mean something. If the programme, equipment and technique all change, it becomes difficult to attribute progress to any one factor. You do not need a laboratory at home; you need consistency in what you compare.
Body mass also needs context. Creatine use can increase water retention and body weight, as the NIH reference explains. A quick change on a scale therefore should not be labelled entirely as new muscle or unwanted fat. Set expectations before buying. Decide which outcome would make the purchase useful to you and how you would recognise it. Read a product through the evidence
Look for a clearly named ingredient, a stated amount per serving, understandable directions and reliable product information. A long list of exciting additions does not answer whether the amount of creatine is clear.
