How to read a supplement label without the guesswork

The number on the front of a bottle rarely tells the whole story. Learn how to compare daily servings, read ingredient amounts and recognise the details that deserve a second look before you buy.

Start with the daily serving

Before looking at the largest number on the front, find the instructions explaining how many capsules, tablets or measures make up the recommended daily amount. UK food supplement guidance requires daily dosage instructions and a warning against exceeding them. The amount of substances with a nutritional or physiological effect also needs to appear on the label. [1]

Here is a fictional comparison: bottle A contains 60 capsules and recommends two per day; bottle B contains 60 capsules and recommends one. At their respective labelled servings, the bottles provide 30 and 60 days. That is useful information, but it does not establish that either formula is stronger, better absorbed or more effective.

Read the amount and its unit together

Amounts in milligrams and micrograms are not interchangeable. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms; labels may show micrograms as mcg or µg. International Units, or IU, require a conversion specific to the vitamin, so a single conversion rule cannot be applied across different nutrients. [2]

Write the unit beside every number when comparing products. For a hypothetical ingredient, 0.5 mg and 500 micrograms describe the same mass. If you copy only the number into your notes, an equivalent serving can appear a thousand times larger. Keep the original label handy rather than relying on a cropped product photograph.

Treat reference values as a comparison tool

NRV stands for nutrient reference value. UK nutrition guidance identifies the reference values used for vitamin and mineral labelling. The percentage on a label expresses an amount relative to that reference; it is not a personal assessment of how much you need. [3]

A fictional label showing 200% NRV is saying that its declared amount is twice the relevant labelling reference. It is not saying that the product is twice as useful as one showing 100%. Nor is the percentage an instruction to keep increasing your intake. Individual nutritional questions need more context than a percentage printed on a bottle.

Check exactly what each number describes

A number may describe the full ingredient, a particular constituent or an equivalent starting material. Copy the complete wording. If a mineral label presents both a compound amount and the quantity of the mineral it provides, compare the latter with the same mineral quantity on the other product.

For a botanical, record the named plant, the part used and whether the ingredient is a powder or extract when those details are supplied. Treat missing information as a question for the seller. A larger front-of-pack amount cannot resolve differences in preparation, and arithmetic alone cannot demonstrate clinical equivalence.

UK guidance requires an ingredients list with relevant allergens emphasised, storage information, a date mark and a statement that food supplements should not replace a varied diet. The food business details matter too: keep them somewhere you can find if a question arises. [1]

Do a second pass for practical suitability. Check the capsule ingredients, flavourings or sweeteners if those matter to you. Read any age restrictions or instructions about taking the product with food. Do not assume that two versions of a familiar product have the same recipe; compare the label again when changing format or buying a reformulated pack.

Compare value using the labelled serving

Calculate cost per labelled day by dividing the purchase price by the number of days in the pack. For example, a fictional £24 bottle lasting 30 days costs 80p per day. A £30 bottle lasting 60 days costs 50p per day. Delivery costs and discounts can change that comparison.

Use that calculation only after the products meet your requirements. A lower cost per gram says little about whether the ingredient or preparation is suitable for you. Make a small comparison sheet with the product name, daily serving, declared ingredient amount, relevant warnings and cost per day. Leave blanks visible instead of filling them with assumptions.

  • Daily serving: how much does the label actually recommend?
  • Amount: does the number refer to the ingredient you are comparing?
  • Units: have mg, micrograms and any IU been handled correctly?
  • Practical details: are ingredients, warnings, dates and business details clear?

Common questions

Does a higher NRV percentage mean a better supplement?

No. It describes the amount relative to a labelling reference, not a proven benefit for you. Use it to understand quantities, then consider your diet and appropriate advice rather than treating a large percentage as a quality score. [3]

Is a bottle with more capsules better value?

Compare the number of days supplied at the labelled serving. Capsule count alone can be misleading when one product recommends one capsule and another recommends two or three. Formula differences still matter after the price calculation.
