Two descriptions, not two opposing ingredients
A search for micronised creatine versus creatine monohydrate can make them look like competitors. They describe different properties. Monohydrate identifies the chemical form. Micronised describes processing to smaller particles. A product labelled micronised creatine monohydrate therefore carries both descriptions, rather than belonging to a separate category of active ingredient.
This matters because a comparison should change one meaningful variable at a time. If one powder has a finer texture and another contains a different creatine compound plus several extras, you are comparing more than particle size. Start with the ingredient panel. Then ask which claim is being made: a mixing preference, a blood-level measurement or a better training result.
Why monohydrate remains the reference point
The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position statement identifies monohydrate as the most extensively studied creatine form. That history makes it a useful benchmark when someone claims a newer form has an advantage. It does not mean every monohydrate product has been tested individually, or that an impressive ingredient name establishes quality by itself. [1]
For the shopper, the useful request is a direct comparison: what was tested against what, at which amount, and with which outcome? An advertisement showing that a product raises a blood measurement is answering a different question from a trial showing an advantage in strength after a training programme. Both can be informative, but they should not be treated as interchangeable.
What the new 2026 micronised study adds
A February 2026 paper compared branded KleanCREATINE with a marketed monohydrate product. It reported favourable absorption and training outcomes for the branded preparation, with a ten-man absorption phase and an eight-week performance phase in 52 active men. The research was funded by Lasons India, and one author declared employment with that company. [2]
This is evidence to examine, not a reason to repeat an outdated statement that no relevant trials exist. Its size, duration, male-only sample and commercial involvement limit how broadly it can be applied. Our interpretation is that this particular comparison cannot establish that every product labelled micronised will outperform every standard powder. It also provides no clinical evidence for Angelic Labs' former creatine product.
Alternative forms need their own evidence
Particle size should also be kept separate from claims about buffered creatine or creatine ethyl ester. In a randomised trial, buffered creatine did not produce greater changes in muscle creatine, body composition or training adaptations than monohydrate under the tested protocols. The study also did not support a lower-side-effect advantage. [3]
A separate seven-week trial in 30 previously untrained men compared creatine ethyl ester, monohydrate and placebo alongside training. It did not establish ethyl ester as the superior option and found it less effective for raising muscle creatine. These results concern those tested forms, not a blanket judgement about all future formulations. [4]
Build a comparison you can actually use
Place two labels side by side and write down the named creatine form, its stated amount per serving, other ingredients and the number of servings. Then compare current cost per labelled serving. This is more informative than comparing a large tub with a small tub, or assuming that a premium-looking name justifies a premium price.
If texture or mixing convenience matters to you, treat it as a preference you can evaluate without turning it into a performance guarantee. If a seller makes a specific clinical comparison, look for the actual trial and its comparator. If quality testing is claimed, check what was tested and whether the documentation identifies the relevant product or batch; do not infer certification from the word pure.
Finally, distinguish the ingredient's research history from the finished product's evidence. Monohydrate research can explain why the ingredient is considered, while the label tells you what is in a particular package. Neither task is completed by a prominent number, a micronised badge or a borrowed study about another supplier's preparation.

- Ask whether a study measured absorption, training outcomes or both.
- Check the comparator, funding and participant group.
- Keep mixing preference separate from claimed clinical superiority.

Can creatine be both micronised and monohydrate?
Yes. Monohydrate names the chemical form, while micronised describes smaller particles. Those words are compatible and do not describe mutually exclusive products.
Does the 2026 study prove all micronised creatine is better?
