What a certificate of analysis can actually tell you
A laboratory report becomes useful when you know which questions to ask. This guide explains how to match a certificate to a product, read its results and recognise the limits of what was tested.

First, identify what the document covers
A certificate of analysis, often shortened to COA, records specified characteristics of a material or sample. The FDA's manufacturing guidance describes supplier certificates for components and expects method information, test limits and actual results when manufacturers rely on them in the circumstances covered by that US rule. This is useful technical context, not a statement of UK legal requirements. [1]
Start with the document title, report number, issuing laboratory and dates. Then look at the sample description. A report about a raw ingredient is different from a report about a finished capsule containing that ingredient. Both can be useful, but they answer different questions.
Match the sample to the bottle
Look for a product name, formulation and batch or lot identifier that can be connected to your pack. If the seller provides a report for a previous batch, ask whether an applicable report exists for yours. A document does not become more relevant simply because it is recent or professionally designed.
Imagine a fictional bottle marked LOT-246. A report listing LOT-208 may describe testing that was carried out properly, while leaving your question about LOT-246 unanswered. Likewise, a report for loose powder cannot, on its own, tell you what happened during every later manufacturing and packaging step.
Read each test line as a separate answer
Do not treat the word 'pass' as a complete explanation. For each line, look for the substance or characteristic examined, the method, the measured result, the unit and any stated acceptance limit. If you cannot tell what criterion was applied, ask the supplier to explain it.
Here is an invented numerical example: a result of 0.10 mg/kg sits below a displayed specification of 0.50 mg/kg. That establishes a relationship between two numbers on the page. It does not establish that the displayed specification is the appropriate legal or technical threshold for that product. Interpreting suitability requires the relevant context.
Ask what the report's shorthand means
Laboratories may use abbreviations or symbols that make sense to their technical customers. Do not silently translate a result such as 'ND' into 'absolutely none'. Ask what the abbreviation means in that report, which method was used and what reporting or detection threshold applies.
This is also a good moment to ask whether a result is quantitative or simply an identity check. One test might address whether a named material is present; another might estimate an amount. A sensible reader keeps those questions separate and avoids turning an answer about identity into an answer about dose.
Check the laboratory and its scope
ISO/IEC 17025 concerns laboratory competence, impartiality and consistent operation. UKAS explains that accreditation considers matters including methods, equipment and measurement traceability. It is a useful feature to investigate when assessing a report, but its existence is not a product benefit claim. [2]
Check the laboratory in the accrediting body's directory and read the relevant schedule. UKAS explains that a testing schedule specifies materials, test types and techniques, allowing customers to see which activities are covered. A general accreditation logo should not replace checking the relevant activity. [3]
Save the schedule alongside the report if this is an important purchase decision. Where the scope is unclear, ask the laboratory or supplier for an explanation instead of inferring coverage from a logo.
Keep the unanswered questions visible
Make two columns in your notes: 'shown by this report' and 'still unknown'. In the first, record only the tests and sample actually described. In the second, record anything you had hoped to learn but could not find, such as an applicable finished-product batch or an explanation of the specification.
Quality documentation and clinical evidence serve different purposes. NIH consumer guidance explicitly notes that independent quality seals do not guarantee that a product is safe or effective. A laboratory result is therefore one part of a decision, alongside ingredient research, suitability and clear product information. [4]

Common questions
Does a COA prove that a supplement works?
No. A report of laboratory measurements does not replace research on health outcomes in people. Even independent quality seals do not guarantee effectiveness. Check clinical evidence separately and keep its relevance to the actual preparation in view. [4]
Is a raw-ingredient COA the same as finished-product testing?
No. The sample descriptions identify different materials. A raw-ingredient report may be relevant to the supply chain, but ask for clarification before assuming it describes the contents of a particular finished-product batch.
